As a nail tech, I would just like to point out a couple of things.
If getting your nails done causes you pain in any way, and/or your nails are damaged in the process, then you are going to a bad tech. Nail services should NEVER hurt in any way. Ever.
In most cases, the technicians who work at discount salons (Think Walmart's Regal Nails) are not experienced, are often untrained, and many times unlicensed. Thus, they are usually not qualified to do your nails. Add to that fact this point: They charge very low prices. In order to keep those prices low, and still make a profit, they do things which are not in the best interest of the client. One of those things is the use of the cheapest acrylic prioducts available, and often those products contain MMA. MMA is a substance which has been banned for for use on nails for over 20 years, and it WILL ruin your nails.Even worse, it can cause serious health problems. They still use this substance because it is a fraction of the cost of the approved products which good, reputable salons use. And, since MMA does not adhere well to the natural nail, they use a Dremel drill (NOT for use on nails, and illegal for such use in many states). To make it adhere, they will 'etch' your nails (rough them up) quite badly. For those of you who say that your nails are ruined from filing them, this is most often the reason why. A drill should never be used on your natural nails. Nor should MMA.

i am a salon owner and stylist, my nail techs use scrubfresh from creative nail instead of a primer before applying the acrylic, this dehydrates the nail the same as a primer and it does'nt sting the way primer does when it goes on your skin. apply scrubfresh to the nail after you have finished filing the nail, apply with a cotton ball and saturate the whole nail. this will definately help with your nail lifting problem.How do you keep acrylic nails from lifting...what are the best products to use?

First is keep nails away from mouth and don't file excessively along the sides of nails.
Use a strengthener, a flat base coat, often called a ridge filler, a polish color and then a top coat. When nail color starts to look dull just re-apply another coat of color and top coat.
Re-do entirely about once every two weeks.
Try to avoid less expensive polishes as I have found that they cause you to have to re-apply way too often (daily) and chip allot.
Learn good filing techniques to do between re-applications.
Try to avoid situations besides regular dishes and bathing/showering and washing of hands, where your hands are in water alot.

Its not the cheap stuff either. Its Sally Hansen. and Its not like a try to put on 6 layers of it. Just one or two coats. But then like 3 hours later it still wont be dry. Any ideas??

I use pure acetone, purchased at Sally's. Soak and scrape until they're gone. Don't recommend pealing off because it will pull part of your nail bed. BTW, the acetone is great for removing nail polish. I don't use nail polish remover anymore because acetone removes it much easier and faster (use cotton ball). But, be very careful with acetone. It will remove stain from wood furniture and eats certain plastics. It also removes nail polish from your sinks and tubs, if you accidentally spill it, like I have! Bottom line, be patient when removing them. Watch TV and let them soak and scrape as long as you can. Then, buff the nail bed lightly to smooth out the roughness and apply a clear, vitamin or nail growth polish for the best results.How can I remove acrylic nails at home?

First of all you should know that the majority of people on this forum consists of teenagers and women who let alone have any desire for beautiful hands and nails would much rather be sitting in front of the tv eating cupcakes and watching Springer. If you do any research at all the bacteria is due to people not washing their hands properly. I have seen a study done where they compared the bacteria levels of a women with nails over an inch compared to a women like ';Alike'; with stubby man hands. What did they find? The stubby man hands had more bacteria under the nails. The study was done over and over again with different lengths of nails until they realized the reason why the longer nails in most cases had less bacteria was because the women took better care of their hands and nails and washed them more thoroughly. So basically your argument is dead in the water and actually falls back on you. Anyway back to your question King K. I have always loved long nails on women in fact I married a women who cares for her long nails. Hands are the first thing I notice on a women (not boobs). When I was dating many women found this a major compliment and loved it that I liked their nails. I work in healthcare where long, acrylic nails are absolutely forbidden. If you knew how much bacteria long nails carry, you wouldn't find short nails so ';repulsive';
I like the look of long french manicures but natural looking nails are hardly disgusting. They're practical and more sanitary. Long, fake nails are a haven for germs and bacteria. The glue line where fake nail meets real nail is packed, PACKED with nasty things. Not to mention chips in the nail polish, and under the nail where it's hard to clean totally during handwashing. And people who wash their hands generally don't do it right to begin with, so I doubt that those girls you find so sexy are walking around with 98% alcohol and a nail brush in their purse so that they can scrub their nails to complete sanitation.
And let's just ignore the sanitation of long nails, there are plenty of women who CAN'T wear long fake, polished nails. Nurses are just one of these. When I took my job at the hospital I was told absolutely no nail polish or acrylic. Let alone women who, like an above poster said, lift weights. Or groom dogs. Or work in daycare. Or hell, stay at home moms. Do you know how easy (and painful) it is to break a nail? Some women work in a profession or lifestyle where long nails are just not practical. They break too easy, or don't have the money to spend (a french manicure can run anywhere from 20-45 dollars for the first set and then 15-20 dollars every two weeks to refill). OH and IF they break, that's another 15 dollars, just to repair the nail, let alone the money they'd be spending on general upkeep.

Its a habit with some people. I sometimes bite my nails not out of nervousness but out of impulse and at times I'm not conscious of it. I doubt that he could bleed to death, but it could be a big mess. Pet stores and catalogs sell a product called Kwik Stop. You apply the powder to the bleeding nail and it stops right away. If you don't have that, you can jam the nail into a bar of soap - that works pretty good. If his nails are really long and are hurting the way he walks or splaying out his feet, you can have the vet sedate him and cut them back really far. If you would like to avoid all of this, try using a flashlight and a pencil or pen to help you out. First use the flashlight to aid in visualization of the nail and the root. Next use the pen or pencil to draw a line just in front tof the nails root. Then take your clippers and cut in front of the line towards the nails tip. This may help you avoid any cutting of the nails root and causing a bleed.

I suggest that you do several steps: 1) desensitize her to paw holds every day 2) use a human nail file to just take down a bit of the nail while you work on a program to trim her nails 3) looking into dremmel (grinding) her nails rather then clipping/cutting. Less risk of getting the quick.

It's well worth your while to do desensitization and classical counter-conditioning rather then forcing your dog during a fearful situation.
Most animal trainers of animals that can kill you such as giraffes, boar, elephants.... they take animal husbandry very importantly and do basic training everyday on these animals so that when it's time to actually do a procedure on a large dangerous animal they are more relaxed and learn how to behave during the procedure. I suggest that you handle her paws and do ';Mock'; nail filing every day PAIRED up with a really fun game or some really yummy treats. Switch her emotional response to this event from fearful/anxious to a more positive one.

You can start by touching her feet all the time, and rewarding her when she doesn't react. Distract her with a treat while you massage them :) This is the best way to calm her down for nail trims.
Something we also suggest to our clients is having a veterinarian perscribe a small sedative for dogs that are unruly.
No drugs. You need to very slowly desensitize her to having her paws touched and handled. This may take weeks. Do it slowly; it may take days for each step. At first you need to just try touching the paw. Use treats for rewards--and bring out the good treats that she loves. Go from touching a paw to holding the paw. Then try to touch the nail. As you build up on this, bring the clippers near her, but don't touch the nail. Then later, aim to take the very tip from one nail. This will take time; don't rush it. If her nails get too long in the interim, you may want to take her to the vet or a groomer to have them clipped. You don't want her to associate anything negative at this point with you handling the paw. Nice long walks on the pavement can help keep the nails worn down and you won't need to clip as often. Good luck and remember--slow and steady.

All you have to do is file it off with an emery board file...It should look white after, but that will fade in less than a week and you'll have normal looking nails. It is from polish, you will want to put a clear base coat on first to prevent it next time.

Next use the pen or pencil to draw a line just in front tof the nails root. Then take your clippers and cut in front of the line towards the nails tip. This may help you avoid any cutting of the nails root and causing a bleed.

I suggest that you do several steps: 1) desensitize her to paw holds every day 2) use a human nail file to just take down a bit of the nail while you work on a program to trim her nails 3) looking into dremmel (grinding) her nails rather then clipping/cutting. Less risk of getting the quick.

It's well worth your while to do desensitization and classical counter-conditioning rather then forcing your dog during a fearful situation.
Most animal trainers of animals that can kill you such as giraffes, boar, elephants.... they take animal husbandry very importantly and do basic training everyday on these animals so that when it's time to actually do a procedure on a large dangerous animal they are more relaxed and learn how to behave during the procedure. I suggest that you handle her paws and do ';Mock'; nail filing every day PAIRED up with a really fun game or some really yummy treats. Switch her emotional response to this event from fearful/anxious to a more positive one.

You can start by touching her feet all the time, and rewarding her when she doesn't react. Distract her with a treat while you massage them :) This is the best way to calm her down for nail trims.
Something we also suggest to our clients is having a veterinarian perscribe a small sedative for dogs that are unruly.
No drugs. You need to very slowly desensitize her to having her paws touched and handled. This may take weeks. Do it slowly; it may take days for each step. At first you need to just try touching the paw. Use treats for rewards--and bring out the good treats that she loves. Go from touching a paw to holding the paw. Then try to touch the nail. As you build up on this, bring the clippers near her, but don't touch the nail. Then later, aim to take the very tip from one nail. This will take time; don't rush it. If her nails get too long in the interim, you may want to take her to the vet or a groomer to have them clipped. You don't want her to associate anything negative at this point with you handling the paw. Nice long walks on the pavement can help keep the nails worn down and you won't need to clip as often. Good luck and remember--slow and steady.

5. Don't get acrylic nails because they file away the enamel on your nails which makes them thin and weak.
6.Don't use your nails as tools to open or pry stuff like soda cans. Doing so will cause breakage.

My nails are really strong. my friend are amazed with them. One tried to break it and it broke the nail varnish and not the nail (thats how strong they are) I file the edges regulary and when one chips file it straight away as this makes them weaker. Seriously eat/drink protein it really does help.

Eat a cube of jelly everyday..you will notice a BIG difference.
My friend's nails are long and strong...they look really nice when they are painted!!
Just try it out for a few weeks :)
insert all fingers and thumbs into warm (you can re-warm in microwave) immerse them whole into horses dung, it has been proved to work is good for the environment, reduces carbon footprint and stops you biting them

Teeth are made up of different material then nails. You can't compare them, they are both specialized tissues with separate functions. Finger nails are abraded much quicker then teeth and so there is the need to replace them. Two sets of teeth is all we need in our life. Or at least WAS all we needed back when evolution was actively taking place.
Hmm here are some observations regarding the previous posts:
1) ';Teeth are like bones';. True but not entirely. You see, if you fracture your bone, it will heal. Teeth on the other hand do not heal themselves. Never heard, nor read, in any dental textbook about a vertical tooth fracture healing spontaneously. N.B. dentine DOES have some reparative functions but they are limited to formation of secondary or sclerotic layer. Not regeneration.
2) ';Only parts can be restored, like the enamel';. By itself? No. Once there is a cavity in enamel then no matter what happens the body will not refill it. True that saliva continues to deposit calcium into enamel but that's not the same as healing.
3) ';Nails are made from keratin (protein) which grows constantly until death';. Actually finger nails and hair continue to grow for a limited period even after death. Go figure ;)

I've had acrylics for the last seven years. They look gorgeous if you have a good nail girl. If you are just getting them for your graduation and them taking them off, you should be fine. i got them when i was 12 and only got them on special occasions but now that i'm 21 i can see how much they ruined my nails it to be 5 yrs to get them to look good on their own but they will never look as good as they did be for i got fake nails, i wouldn't start if i were you.
20 dollars, once you get them you have to go back every week or so to get them filled in. When you get ready to take them off, they thin the nail, scar them, and sometimes a fungus infection can develop. Just go to the salon and have them to design your own nails.
They can be bad for your nails if they're not done right because they use a machine to make your nail rough on top so the glue sticks to them. If you're not planning on keeping them on for a while, I wouldn't bother. you need a fill-in about every 2 weeks unless your nails grow really fast. They look nice, but they're pricey. I'm in Alabama and they cost about $24 for a full set, and about $15 per fill-in. The price varies from state-to-state and city-to-city as well. But it's an expensive upkeep regardless.

They fell in love with them so decided to have them done a few more times from a very reputable, clean salon but when they removed them that last time they realized that their own nails had become discolored, split, and just plain messy looking. It all depends on your nails....are they weak? because if they are the acrylics will damage your real nails and it will have 2 look bad for about 2 weeks...because thats how long it takes for the nail 2 grow from the bed to the top... Oh and you already know to be careful...but I'll give some personal experience. I went to a nail shop and the tech was apparently having a bad day so she filled my skin off from the side of my nails, I didn't realize it untill I went to wash my hands when the pain struck. Also I got my nails done then when she told me to go wash my hands as part of the process the bathroom and were they kept their equipment was digustingly dirty. Just make sure you go someplace were they are known for cleanliness and doing a good job. Also dont do gel nails because they will fall out before you have them on for a week if they use the real gel nails because now people are starting to mix acrylic with gel nail since its easier to do...Good luck.

Acrylic nails will damage your natural nails and starve them from nourishment. It will dry out and become irritated. You should stay away from acrylic nails especially at your age. Try some nail stickers and glitter polish:)

If you want them on temporarily-- ask them not to grind, that you won't be getting them refilled. It can be quite painful if they grind to far down so be careful.

Original cost is 30-40$ and then 12-20$ for fill ins. You say your 12 and I'm sure very active physically and do you have any idea how painful it is to break one of these babies. You can not just decide to have them on for an occasion and then just take them off. It is a commitment. If a guy gets a full set with color, he's usually either gay or a crossdresser. And I do mean ';full set'; like acrylic tips. Even without the tips, men who get color on their nails usually fall into one of those categories. The only exception I've seen is punk, goth, etc guys painting their nails black. And then, they don't GET them done, they do them theirselves. Metrosexual guys are known to get their nails done and such, but usually it's just a manicure, maybe with some clear polish. A full set with color? That's definitely a girly pick-me-up.
For you to feel that girly pick-me-up and be unsure enough about it to ask this question, maybe you should take a look at yourself and see if this is something you want to look into. Good luck!
