Apparently it's an indicator of a lack of important vitamins and minerals in your system...The nails are dead cells so they are sort of a picture of what has been going on in your system the weeks prior to the growth.

I'm not sure on this one, but I remember someone telling me that it's because you need more calcium.

Those are areas where you've hit or put pressure on your nail. It is the equivalent of a bruise on your skin. It's no big deal, they just grow out with the nail.
it could mean ur low in iron and calcium u could also be enemic
It means a lack of Zinc in your diet, not calcium as most people say on here!
I've heard it can be a lack of calcium deficiency or if you have knocked or damaged them also leaves white marks until the nail grows out.
